Lions have never fared as badly as they are doing today. A team of international scientists has investigated Africa's lion population, particularly in the Ngorongo Conservation Area in Tanzania. The results are alarming. Is the king of the beasts facing extinction? Although lions can still find suitable habitats in the conservation area, they also encounter many problems. It's particularly difficult for lions to survive in areas inhabited by humans. ''That's led to a significant decrease in the lion population,'' says Philipp Henschel, a German zoologist working for the organization Panthera, which is dedicated to protecting wild members of the cat family. ''Since the mid-20th Century, the number of lions has dropped by around 90 percent. We believe that today there are only around 20,000 lions living in the wild,'' he says. Experts estimate that these animals now only occur in around 8 percent of their original territories a dramatic development that has largely gone unnoticed to date. There are various reasons for this. To meet the needs of the constantly growing human population, large areas of wilderness are being transformed into agricultural land. Many prides of lions are separated from each other as a result and are now threatened by in-breeding. Even in places where lions still have their original habitat, they often struggle to find food. On the one hand, humans hunt the lions' natural prey for their own pots, on the other hand, their cattle and goat herds compete with their wild counterparts. That often leaves lions with no choice but to kill livestock, which in turn means that villagers kill them out of retaliation or pre-emptively. The Swedish lion expert Ingela Jansson has been studying the Ngorongo Conservation Area in Tanzania to see how lions cope with living close to humans and their livestock. She's particularly worried about one pride where the male was killed by humans. Are the young still alive?

In the midst of the Cold War, the Vietnam conflict triggered a massive wave of international protest. It also marked the detonation of an antimilitarist counterculture experimenting with drugs and lifestyles in all areas of pop production. Comics, antiwar films and singer-songwriters inspired young people around the world. Since the mid-20th century, pop culture has been in the vanguard of profound social change. In Germany, accompanied by the pianos and guitars of the songwriters, pop culture pacifism joined forces with the peace movement's ''No More War' slogans fueling mass demonstrations directed at NATO's ''Dual Track Decision'. Water breaks the stone! Petting instead of Pershing! Nonviolent resistance in accordance with Gandhi's teachings and slogans from the civil disobedience inspired the pickets at nuclear missile bases in Germany. Writers such as Ken Follett, Alexis Jenni and Hanif Kureishi look back at those years. But it's the views of a younger generation of musicians on the apparently long lost movement that bring the timeliness and relevance of ''Peace 'n' Pop' into sharp relief.

In the 13th Century, a movement that had mainly begun amongst women spread throughout Europe. It held that values such as modesty, solidarity and religious sincerity should determine women's lives. Thus the Beguine movement was born. The Beguines were a lay religious organization. Each Beguine chapter was autonomous and could elect its own superior: the ''Grande Dame''. Unlike nuns, they took no vows in perpetuity and could leave at any time. Of course, their independence went too far for the church and at times the movement was accused of heresy or even banned. The film takes three Beguinages in Flanders to show how they lived and worked as self-styled ''Housekeepers of God.'' They earned their living by washing and bleaching, making wool tapestries and lace. They devoted themselves to caring for the poor and took care of orphans. The Beguine chapter in Lier, one of the most beautiful in Flanders, is now a big tourist attraction. The most famous, ''Ten Wijngarde'' in the old Hanseatic city of Bruges, is today a Benedictine monastery. The most recent, ''St. Amantsberg'' in Ghent, dates from the end of the last century a sign of how long the Beguine movement has survived in Flanders.

India is a country of incredible stories, both cheerful ones and dark ones, and women are writing the most exciting of them. In spite of discrimination and violence, they are boxing their way to the front, sometimes literally as ghetto boxers or hip-hop singers. Many Indian women want the 21st Century to be the century of women and are courageously fighting towards that goal. India impresses everyone with its colors and the women who wear them. Their stories are just as colorful as their clothes, sometimes bright and cheerful, sometimes dark and oppressive, other times garish and wild. There's virtually no other country on Earth where the gap between tradition and modernity is greater. 18-year-old Ajmira is a boxer in Kolkata. She and the other girls training in her club don't want to be victims anymore. The youngest have only just started going to school. They're preparing for life in a part of Kolkata where rape is an everyday occurrence. A ''dalit,'' a member of India's lowest caste, the 'Untouchables', is reaching for the stars. She wants to become a hip-hop singer and take down the caste system in the process. Many also think the world's oldest mother is quite outrageous. She lives in Amritsar in northern India and has had a son at the age of 70 thanks to a donor egg. In the state of Jharkhand in eastern India women are still beaten or stoned to death for alleged witchcraft. Some villages seem abandoned. The patterns are reminiscent of medieval witch trials in Europe. In both cases, the triggers were and are usually local tragedies and the search for a scapegoat. India is a contradictory culture that likes to tell women what they should be like. But resistance is gradually growing and women are choosing their own path.

Rola El-Halabi, born in Lebanon and two-time world champion woman boxer for Germany, survived her most severe assault in 2011, not in the ring but in her own family: her step-father shot her in the hands and knees to end her career as a boxer. But she didn't give up. Instead she fought her way back into the ring with an iron will and regained control of her destiny. Rola El-Halabi came to Germany as a one-year-old in 1986 when her parents fled the civil war in Lebanon. A short while later, her father left his wife and children and returned to his home country. Rola's mother soon met Hicham 'Roy' El-Halabi, a Lebanese man, whom she married. Rola was eight when her step-father took her to Thai boxing events. The little girl showed a great talent for boxing, something that is more of a man's world than a woman's, and she made her first appearance in the ring when she was just 14. It was the start of a meteoric career. Her step-father became her manager and she soon managed the leap from the amateur to the professional league. She was just nineteen at her first world championship fight. But when she was 25, she met her future husband. Her stepfather told her to stop seeing him so she went against him for the first time in her life and ditched him as her manager. Before her next fight, on 1 April 2011, Roy entered Rola's changing room armed with a gun and shot at her hands, knees and feet. It took Rola two years before she could walk properly again, but eventually she made it back into the boxing ring. Today Rola and Kosta are married. They have a daughter and run a sports academy in Ulm.
